Katie's Story
My love for teaching reading started when I began college. My grandmother, a retired elementary school librarian, helped me get a job at her old school. Little did I know, this job would change my life forever. The first day on the job, I was hooked. I was hired to teach guided reading groups alongside an exceptional reading specialist. Seeing the potential and growth of each child was the best part about the job. This job gave me the passion for linguistics and I specialized in linguistics while earning my Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts from San Diego State University. I worked at the school as long as I could until I had to stop working to earn my teaching credential. After earning my credential, I taught second grade at a private Christian school. I stopped teaching in the classroom when I had my first child, Carter. Of course I couldn’t forget my passion for teaching reading and soon I was teaching both my children to read. My friend, Cara Day, a reading specialist and educational and behavioral therapist, worked alongside us for a year as we used her reading curriculum. Both my boys entered Kindergarten able to read fifth grade level books. Now that both my children are in school full time in a Chinese language academy, I am pursuing my passion as a reading instructor. I would love to share my passion with you!
